VTN95 PE and ME: The legend is back!

With the VTN95 PE, Vintagetools is launching a completely newly developed device for the first time – made from brand-new components, without compromising on quality. There are many high-quality stereo equalizers for stems in mixing or final mastering. But what makes the VTN95 PE unique. The analog German broadcast technology offers outstanding cassette-format equalizers – one of the most legendary being the W495 STB / PEa, which was used not only in mixing consoles but also in vinyl mastering. Almost every professional vinyl production from the 1970s to the 1990s went through this equalizer. Since the founding of Vintagetools, this has been the most requested module – but original units are extremely hard to find. And even if they are available, they often come with operational limitations. Many customers, for example, wish for a more precise adjustment in 1 dB or 0.5 dB steps, especially for mastering applications.

The idea of faithfully cloning this equalizer has been around for a long time. But instead of creating a replica with the same design, yet using cheaper components or cutting costs by omitting expensive transformers – as is often the case – our goal was to develop a no-compromise, high-quality reproduction that preserves the authentic quality of early broadcast technology.

The Challenge:

How can this equalizer be reproduced with the same quality, improved in terms of measurements, and enhanced with useful featureswithout altering its sound and character – while keeping it at a reasonable price? After over two years of development, we have the answer. With the VTN95 PE Program Equalizer and the VTN95 ME Mastering Equalizer, the original is now available in two improved versions in a 19-inch format. Not only has the circuit diagram been followed 100%, but key features have also been added. For example, there are additional selectable frequencies in the low and high bands. The mid band has been doubled and designed using a quarter-octave technique. Thanks to the overlapping frequencies, these equalizers are extremely flexible. The so-called Pultec trick is also easily achievable here.
