History:
The BKE-4 is the successor of the swiss made BKE 1 - BKE 3 units which were manufactured by FILTEK Labo SA in the 1970´s. The BKE-4 was the last in this series before Filtek had to close down. It was build around 1980. BKE stands for Begrenzer-Kompressor-expander which means Limiter-compressor-expander. Just as the other Filtek dannercassette, the MK3 equalizer, the BKE was later also manufactured by the german company BFE which is one of the few survivers of the analog era.
Design:
The BKE-4 is a leveling amplifier based on VCA-technique. The previous BKE modules 1-3 were FET-based. It has a very elaborate design with automatic control and switchable RMS or peak detectors. The BKE-4 offers a good operability which makes it easy to find good settings. Like most of the other danner cassettes too, the BKE-4 has hi-quality audio transformers in the in- and output of the signal path.
The unit has a sidechain for frequency dependent compression effects and many parameters to control.
Sound:
The Filtek BFE BKE-4 is a very neutral sounding hi-quality leveling amp. It is very suitable for all styles of music and also for speech. Thanks to it´s elaborate design and hi-quality parts, the limiter works without any audible artefacts and the compressor can go from very decent to extreme fx-compression. The BKE-4 is much more of an allrounder than i.e. the Neumann U473 is.
